The Lakers had their way in the NBA Playoffs' first-round by dispatching an overmatched Nuggets, 4-0. Their NBA West Semi-Final competition will be heavier, in the form of the Utah Jazz, who finished off the Houston Rockets in 6 games.

The Lakers have home-court advantage, but only claim three more wins during the regular-season over the Jazz. The Utah Jazz are, as always, a crafty and tough squad, led by Head Coach Jerry Sloan. Sloan always has his teams prepared, and he and the Jazz normally fly under the radar. This season is no different.

The Jazz will have to stop Kobe Bryant during key times of the series, easier said than done. The probable NBA MVP will get his, but it is up to the Jazz' defense to stop the monster games that Bryant is capable of. Kobe averaged 33 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists in the Nuggets series. Defending Kobe Bryant is a team assignment, but Andrei Kirilenko could shoulder the load, and could be effective being long and lanky, able to get into Kobe Bryant's comfort zone.

The Jazz' offense rides with the pick and roll, Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer the force behind it, much like Karl Malone and John Stockton back in the day. The Jazz have been great at home during the regular-season, at 37-4 in their home State.

The Lakers are on a roll, however. Bursting through to the #1-seed at the end of the regular-season, plus scorching the Nuggets, enabling the Lakers to get some rest. The Jazz will be formidable, but the Lakers have a little too much firepower with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom. Lakers in 7 hard fought games to advance to the NBA Western Conference Finals.

Customer Review: GREAT GIFT FOR GRANDKIDS
Easily assembled, great fun, a little noisey but that's why you buy it for grandkids.
Customer Review: Its kind of neat - not $30 neat.
This is a piece of garbage. The balls deflate after a couple hours. The rim is so frail it won't hold up to much. My friend came over and yelled slam dunk threateningly at my hoop at which point I got in between them and the hoop and said this hoop was not for slam dunking. They correctly pointed out that it says "Slam Dunk Challenge" right on the back board. Don't do it - it will break. When I turned it on it kept score wrong and gave points for misses. So that function is worthless. The only reason I gave it two stars is that it looks kind of cool but will have to find a nerf ball.

Many people who play basketball want to learn how to jump higher so that they can be the one in the game that is counted on to help the team win. Whether that is by getting hold of that rebound or making a slam dunk as the buzzer rings jumping high can truly help you in your game. But to jump high doesn't come naturally to some and so you have to work at it. If you are unsure of how to do that then let me be the one to help you out.

You see, the exercises that are needed to help you in learning how to jump higher are ones that don't generally require any kind of special equipment or gym fees. The exercises that I find to be helpful are the ones that you can do pretty much any time and anywhere. Whether while on the couch watching the game or when you are walking across the room, you can be doing things to tone your calves and other muscles. A very small change that you can make is to attach ankle weights for when you go for a jog or if you are simply cleaning out the garage. No need to add a lot of weight, if you can add two pounds or five pounds it doesn't matter so long as you are doing what is necessary to build up your leg strength.

There are of course other things that will help you learn how to jump higher. You are going to think it silly to say this but something that will really help to build up your calves and other leg muscles is skipping. Skipping will probably not be the first thing to come to mind when you start thinking of way to build up leg strength but it should be. To see what I am saying, imagine yourself skipping and think of the leg muscles that are involved to get you off the ground. Of course you can't just dally about and expect results, each time you spring from the ground use your toes to take you higher each and every time. Not only will it build up the necessary muscles but it will also help to work others as well.

Jogging is another way that can help you in your game. Of course you can't just go on a three mile sprint and expect to come back alive but if you start easy and work your way up to the distance your want you will see an overall change in yourself. Your lungs will hold more air, your legs will be stronger and your body will begin changing because of the different muscles that are used. It will be something that can help you as you learn how to jump higher as the muscles that will be worked will be ones to help you achieve your goal.

Raising yourself onto your toes and then back down will work an amazing amount of muscles, especially your calves. Working the quads is also something that is very important and that can be done by doing the squats that we all know and love.

What is important is realizing that anything done to an extreme can take all the fun out of it. But if you work in moderation you will allow your body to work change for the good in a way that it can tolerate.

Plyometrics

In this article I am going to explain the top plyometric exercises to slam dunk. In vertical jumping and slam dunking, the main thing you should focus your energies on increasing is your muscular power. Plyometrics are exercises designed to increase this muscular power, which is the force your muscles exert in a short burst of time. These sort of exercises can be extremely effective in increasing your vertical to slam dunk because it increases the explosiveness of your muscles. The following plyometric exercises are designed to increase your muscular power.

On Box Jumps

Find a box, chair, or anything that you can jump on top of. Stand in front of the object and explode up onto it - step off and repeat. There are a few ways you can go about doing this exercise. You can try to have a shorter object and try and jump onto it with as little bend in your knees as possible or you can have a higher object that requires that you really give it your all to jump onto it by bending your knees. Play around with what an optimal height would be for your object. Shoot for about 3-8 reps per set for this exercise.

Paused Jump Squat

Put about 10% - 15% of your max squat on a barbell and load it on your shoulders as if you were going to be doing a squat. Perform a squat just as you normally would until your thighs are about parallel with the ground. Explode upward and jump as high as you can. This is more of an advanced exercise so be careful when doing this. Shoot for about 5-10 reps per set for this exercise.

Important Things To Note:

These are just one of the many plyometric exercises I personally used to slam dunk. I used on box jumps and paused jump squats in relation with numerous other key exercises. Collectively, these various exercises helped me to increase my vertical. My training was effective because the plyometric exercises I used were tailored to my specific body type which helped me to make my gains greater and faster. Although the two exercises explained above can be powerful in your training, certain body types will benefit more from these and other body types will benefit less.

Which type of body type are you and what types of exercises will you benefit the most from? Many vertical jump program out today will give you a specific training program that tailors to your body. About Adidas
The vision of company founder Adolf Dassler has long become reality, and his corporate philosophy the guiding principle for successor generations. The idea was as simple as it was brilliant. Adi Dassler's aim was to provide every athlete with the best possible equipment. It all began in 1920, when Adi Dassler made his first shoes using the few materials available after the First World War. The Adidas name dates back to 1948, deriving from the first two syllables of Adi Dassler's first and last name. One year later, Adi Dassler registered the Three Stripes as a trademark. After a period spanning almost 70 years, the Dassler Family withdrew from the company in 1989, and the enterprise was transformed into a corporation ("Aktiengesellschaft"). French-born Robert Louis-Dreyfus was Chairman of the Executive Board from April 1993 to March 2001. It was he who initiated Adidas' flotation on the stock market in November 1995. Adidas--a name that stands for competence in all sectors of sport around the globe. Today, the Adidas product range extends from shoes, apparel and accessories for basketball, soccer, fitness and training to adventure, trail and golf.

There is a wealth of information available for the beginning basketball coach, however a lot of it is too advanced for someone who may be just getting started. Those men, women, or teenagers who will be coaching youth teams need to be fed information relative to their own knowledge and level of experience, and to that of the youth they will be coaching. They need to learn how, what, and when to do the things relative to that sport. Then, they need to be able to translate this information into meaningful teaching activity for the youngsters.

Teaching requires that learning is taking place. Just going through motions isnt teaching. Just telling or directing traffic is not teaching.

Let me make something clear right herethere is a difference between coaching and teaching. Coaching is telling or directing. Teaching is explaining and showing how something is done, and why. New players to the game need more of the latter. Professional basketball players still need teaching, so teaching certainly cant go missing at the youth level. Most people dont even give a thought to the difference between the two terms, yet it is vast. We teach in practicewe coach during a game. A lot of coaches yell, direct and play traffic cop while moving players around. The good ones teach. Here is an example: A class room teacher teaches the basics of math, with all the nuances of the particular kind of math being taught--lots of explanation, demonstration, examples, practice, homework, etc. When it comes time to take FCATS or SCATS, etc., the teacher now coaches the students on how to take the testnot on how to do the math.

In sports, the basics are taught for every aspect of the game. They are explained, demonstrated and drilled. They are instructed in how everything they are learning comes together in order to play a game. Once the game begins, the teacher becomes a coach, directing the play of the game. The game moves too quickly for any more teaching to effectively take placeespecially for young children. Once the game is over, the coach reverts back to the teacher, using the game experience to illustrate areas where weakness needs to be worked on and encouraging the areas where what has been taught was indeed caught by the youngsters.

If an adult cant play the piano, how can they possibly teach a child how to play the piano? If the coach of young players has never played basketball, how does one teach movement, passing, dribbling, floor balance, shooting, etc.? We would rarely see such a novice at the game attempting to guide a group of teenagers. It could be disastrous. The teens would most likely already have some experience at the gamemaybe several years of playingand already are advanced over the newbie coach. The new coach would be better working with very young players with little or no experience, where the coach can learn skills as they go and impart them to their charges without so much angst.

God Bless the Volunteer Coaches! Where would most sports programs be without these volunteer adults, parents or teenagers who show up, regardless of game experience, to direct a group of youngsters? Now comes the hard part.

Even if a coach has played the game, or is not brand new to coaching, is that coach well-schooled in how to coach basketballespecially at beginning levels? How have they been trained in child-play and psychology? Well-meaning adults often have no clue how to formulate a teaching plan for this age level, much less carry out the teaching of the varied skills necessary to play the game, even moderately well.

The children are really coming out for a sport to have fun and learn a little about the game. These kids are not pros in training. The coach can take it slowly and instruct at a very basic level. This is an important set of concepts for coaches to understand. Young kids just want to have fun. They want to learn. They want to play. But if its not fun, weve probably lost them.

We should feel fortunate if a 6-9 year old can tie their own shoe laces and walk and run without stumbling. The time for other-handed layups, between-legs dribbling, and attempts from 3-point land are for the future. The time for team offenses and defenses, out-of-bounds plays, etc., is for the future. The coach that places focus here is not teaching. This coach is creating frustration for himself/herself and for the youngsters. Because this coach is trying too hard to bring advanced skills and play to players not physically, emotionally or experientially ready, the fun will not be there for players or coach. This kind of focus will usually mean winning games is very important to the coach.

Coaches, I challenge you to ask the kidswhat would they most like to do--win games or have fun? Later on in a playing career, part of the fun is connected to winning, for sure. But at the lowest levels, at least through grade 6, let there be fun and let the game be for the children, not for the adults.

Youth sports are a great universal pastime. They are a place for children to learn skills, to experiment with a sport to see if it resonates with them, to be socially interactive, and to have fun. Sports are indeed a metaphor for life. All the lessons for group dynamics are present here--how to function in a scaled down society, how to act and react to the myriad of experiences that will come into play as they progress in sports. Yet the fundamental experience here must always be to allow the child to be a childnot to have to think, behave and participate as an adult. Thats for the future. Youth sports are for the youth. They are for the participants to learn, act and participate in a childs activity. The best thing an adult director or coach of a youth sport could do for the children is to allow them to be children, functioning within a childs society, and to above all, have fun.

As a teacher of the game for coaches and players, my particular specialty is working with beginning coaches. I feel that if, in the process of my teaching, the coach learns and understands how to perform the skills of basketball, they can in their turn become teachers of the game. Becoming a teaching-coach is the highest award I could bestow on any prospective coach. My web site is devoted to helping the newbie to become a teaching-coach.

In order to help new coaches get started and to learn the basics for teaching the game, I created a 4-hour basketball teaching DVD which should be beneficial for any new coach. CLICK HERE for a PREVIEW of the DVD:http://www.top-basketball-coaching.com/oldsite/basketball_high.wmv

Ill impart this last bit of information. Any coach, or prospective youth sports coach, who really cares about the direction youth sports has taken, would be well-advised to get a copy of Bob Bigelows book, Just Let The Kids Play. It may just help the adults to get out of the way and let children do what they do best--just be kids.

Coach Ronn Wyckoff has spent more than fifty years in basketball. As an international consultant, his programs have reached hundreds of players and coaches around the world. He has coached four national teams and conducted national player camps. In forty-plus years of coaching boys, girls, men and women, from the playgrounds to national teams, they won over 70% of their games. The international club teams he coached won over 80%.

His 4-hour teaching DVD, "Basketball On A Triangle: A Higher Level of Coaching and Playing", has received high praise. His soon to be released book of the same title has received accolades from those who have reviewed it, as being unique in it's detailed approach to teaching life lessons through the teaching of the game, as well as teaching coaches how to teach fundamentals.
