As the Austin real estate market expands in all directions, areas we used to think of as "way out there" are not only seeming closer, but are getting their own infrastructure. Maple Run in Southwest Austin is just one of those areas. Located south of William Cannon, north of Slaughter, west of Brodie and east of Mopac, this little oasis offers quiet streets, attractive and affordable housing, burgeoning businesses and is a hop, skip and a jump to one of the city's cleanest, newest and nicest parks.

Each street in the area seems to have its own personality. The Deer Park subdivision is full of brick homes, with meticulously manicured gardens and lawns. These folks do a magnificent job with holidays - their Christmas lights are worth a trip, and Halloween is always scary! A few blocks down, you will find a more relaxed atmosphere, maintained just as nicely, but with a more casual feel. The busiest street is Copano, which is not busy at all! The houses in this area can run the gamut from a 3,000 square foot two story brick home with a pool to a 1200 sq. foot one level 2 br/ 2 bath with a nice yard. Many of these homes back to a greenbelt - nice and quiet.

Brodie Lane, one of the main north-south thoroughfares of the area, is full of convenient businesses closer to Ben White, but as you follow the street south of William Cannon heading down to Slaughter you find new business popping up almost every day. Take the intersection of Alexandria and Brodie - you have the best Cajun food and live music in town, an Austin Regional Clinic, Love Pet Hospital, Shipley's Donuts, a florist, nail salons, a JiffyLube, and more! Just up the road is a Montessori school, just down the road is the Kid's Zone preschool and daycare. Austin Telco and Advance Auto just came to the area, although the property adjoining them still has cattle on it - a truly Austin juxtaposition.

Families will love the Longview playground and park located at the eastern end of Harper's Ferry. Swings and a play structure perfect for toddlers on up to school age are in great condition, and there are lots of trees for shade. A big field is perfect for kicking the ball or throwing the Frisbee, and there is a basketball court right up the hill. If you are looking for a little more, just head over to Dick Nichols - just west of Mopac off Davis. The toddler structure here is brand new, and the bigger kids one is in great repair. Picnic tables, a fountain for splash play, volleyball courts (or the world's largest sandbox, depending on your age), tennis courts and a hike/bike trail can all be found here. Their pool is one of the best, with separate shallow and deep ends, plus a toddler wading pool - all crystal clear and in excellent condition.

It might seem "way out west," but Southwest Austin is only 15 minutes to downtown, and the bang for your housing buck make it well worth considering.

"Welcome to Indiana basketball." Hoops history was made in northern Indiana over the weekend by a small township school off US 30.

This should come as no surprise from the state that spawned the most famous and encouraging sports movie in history, 'Hoosiers,' detailing the run of the 'Milan Miracle' in 1954. That school had an enrollment of 161 students, Oregon Davis has 246 students; but what happened to both schools was similar Saturday night at the high school state finals in Indianapolis.

Oregon Davis became the first high school to win both the 1-A girls and boys championship in the same year. Four other schools previously had teams in both state finals, but none had won. In a state where basketball is beloved, where coach Bobby Knight ruled for a spell, that is a prized endeavor.

"I'm not an oddsmaker, but I gotta think the odds aren't good for such a small school to make this sort of history," said IHSAA assistant commissioner Ray Craft. "Having a community pull together for its young people is amazing and truly unique," IHSAA commissioner Blake Ress said.

Do you want to know what is even more amazing? Four years ago, when my son(from Bremen) played against the OD Bobcats, I was actually rooting for and feeling sorry for that team. They had the longest losing streak in the state. That group of boys had never won a game throughout their entire basketball career. You could see it in their depresssed demeanor on and off the court. They were discouraged...my heart went out to them.

However, a younger group of guys did not let defeat define their school reputation. They began to look forward not back and did the next thing to prepare to change that losing legacy. They learned from the previous losses and then let that fuel the passion to perform better the next year and year after. Same coach but a different attitude. Their work took winning to a whole new level.

Congratulations to Coach Travis Hannah and OD community for not giving up on the school and the team. Congratulations to the many individuals, too numerous to name, who believed and had a part in the process to encourage the kids to work hard and stay in the competition.

It does make a difference in athletics and the game of life to have people behind the scenes who believe in you and encourage you to reach your goals. Let that be a lesson to all of us. And as they say, the rest is Indiana basketball history!

Customer Review: False advertisement my foot!
I was with the company when the person ordered the shoes and they just simply ordered the wrong ones. With online order it's always best to triple check your orders. Needless to say I could use a pair of these now just to be different. I think these came out a little too early.
Customer Review: False Advertisement!!!
Well, my daughter picked these shoes out, and said she wanted Santa to bring them to her.. I order the shoes, and expedited the shipping to have them here in time, only to have a completely different looking pair of shoes arrive! It is the Friday before Christmas, and there is no way I am gonna be able to get the shoes pictured above for her for Christmas!!! I would just like to thank all those involved in in this case of fraud!! Please be warned that you will not receive the shoes pictured when ordering these shoes!!!!!

Many people who play basketball want to learn how to jump higher so that they can be the one in the game that is counted on to help the team win. Whether that is by getting hold of that rebound or making a slam dunk as the buzzer rings jumping high can truly help you in your game. But to jump high doesn't come naturally to some and so you have to work at it. If you are unsure of how to do that then let me be the one to help you out.

You see, the exercises that are needed to help you in learning how to jump higher are ones that don't generally require any kind of special equipment or gym fees. The exercises that I find to be helpful are the ones that you can do pretty much any time and anywhere. Whether while on the couch watching the game or when you are walking across the room, you can be doing things to tone your calves and other muscles. A very small change that you can make is to attach ankle weights for when you go for a jog or if you are simply cleaning out the garage. No need to add a lot of weight, if you can add two pounds or five pounds it doesn't matter so long as you are doing what is necessary to build up your leg strength.

There are of course other things that will help you learn how to jump higher. You are going to think it silly to say this but something that will really help to build up your calves and other leg muscles is skipping. Skipping will probably not be the first thing to come to mind when you start thinking of way to build up leg strength but it should be. To see what I am saying, imagine yourself skipping and think of the leg muscles that are involved to get you off the ground. Of course you can't just dally about and expect results, each time you spring from the ground use your toes to take you higher each and every time. Not only will it build up the necessary muscles but it will also help to work others as well.

Jogging is another way that can help you in your game. Of course you can't just go on a three mile sprint and expect to come back alive but if you start easy and work your way up to the distance your want you will see an overall change in yourself. Your lungs will hold more air, your legs will be stronger and your body will begin changing because of the different muscles that are used. It will be something that can help you as you learn how to jump higher as the muscles that will be worked will be ones to help you achieve your goal.

Raising yourself onto your toes and then back down will work an amazing amount of muscles, especially your calves. Working the quads is also something that is very important and that can be done by doing the squats that we all know and love.

What is important is realizing that anything done to an extreme can take all the fun out of it. But if you work in moderation you will allow your body to work change for the good in a way that it can tolerate.

Kobe Bryant was a one-man gang for the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring 30 of his game-high 52 points in the 4th quarter and overtime, as the Lakers beat the Dallas Mavericks 108-104, in overtime.

The game, played in front of the Los Angeles faithful, showcased Kobe Bryant once again, as Kobe scored the final 14 points for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 4th quarter to help bring the game to overtime. Along with his 52 points, Kobe Bryant pulled down 11 rebounds, and hit 20 free throws in the victory.

With the win, the Los Angeles Lakers continue their winning ways. The Lakers have now won 11 of their last 12 games, and show no sign of letting up in the super-competitive NBA Western Conference. The win brings the Los Angeles Lakers to 42-18, while the Dallas Mavericks dropped to 39-21.

Jason Kidd hit for 15 points and threw in 11 assists in the loss for the Dallas Mavericks, while Dirk Nowitzki clicked for 30 points to go with 13 rebounds. The game was chippy at times, and got physical in spots. The days of the NBA Western Conference not playing defense, or at least not trying to play defense is long gone. If you do not play defense, and play defense well, you will not even make the playoffs at this rate in the NBA West.

Kobe Bryant out-dueled last year's NBA MVP, Dirk Nowitzki, and made it look easy. Kobe Bryant took a big step in my book towards earning his first NBA MVP award in the impressive win.
