Happy people dont just wait for chancethey focus on and generate happiness. They know what makes them happy and engage in activities that put them in the zone. They also give generously of themselves.

Use these 4 techniques to experience more happiness in your life.

1. Set out to be happy.

Intend. Decide. Plan to be happy today. What meetings, events and work do you have scheduled? How can you enjoy them?

Leadership trainer, Gayle, learned how to set out being happy early on. She grew up on a farm and helped with milking the cows and feeding the pigs. Each morning, her mother would open the blinds and say, "Its going to be a great day today, Gayle! Gayle would roll out of bed excited, put her boots on and work on the farm before school. One rainy morning when her mother entered her room smiling with her daily greeting, Its going to be a great day today, Gayle snapped, No its not! Its raining! They went back and forth like that for a few minutes. Then Gayles mother turned off the lights and closed the blinds. You might as well go back to bed. If youve already decided its going to be a terrible day, it probably will be. Sure enough, that day turned out to be pretty long and boring.

I really got the message my mom was trying to teach that day, Gayle remembers. Its affected my whole outlook on life. Now I focus on making every day a good day, and I pass this message on to my students. Gayle is a highly enthusiastic and happy person who loves her work. In her seminars, she passes out rocks painted by her 92-year-old mother that say, Its a great day!

Gear yourself toward happiness first thing in the morning. Run through the events of the day in your mind and imagine being happy. Some days will be happier than others, but at least youll begin with a running start. That single act of deciding to generate happiness will bring you greater joy.

2. Know what makes you happy.

What makes *you* truly, authentically happy? You. Not your family, friends or co-workers. What makes your day? Take a moment right now to jot down 10 things that make you happy. Let your thoughts range freely. Maybe some things you havent done in a long time will pop-up on your list, such as watercolor painting or playing tennis. A flight attendant, Rebecca, gains happiness from fresh-cut flowers, knitting, gardening and walking her two dogs. George enjoys number puzzles, creating movies for fun and hiking. Large or small, know the exact things that make you happy.

A database manager applies her recipe for happiness every day. Laughing makes me the happiest, she says. I try to do it early in the day. I finish visiting with my co-workers and doing my comedy routine and the rest of my day is filled with the vibrations from that joy. Her co-workers benefit as well. Her humor is contagious. Because a sense of rapport filters through the group, co-workers can rely on and rally behind each other on projects when needed.

Whats on your list? Prioritize things that make you happy. Sprinkle them into each day. Youll benefit. Your family and co-workers will benefit too. And happiness almost always increases productivity.

3. Engage in what you do.

Its important to do what you love. Its equally important to find ways to engage fully in what you love to do. Whether its knitting, running or designing a websitefind those activities that pull your whole focus into them.

One working professional, Jeff, finds time to engage in his passion for basketball. Every Tuesday and Thursday night from 8 to 10 p.m., I get together with the guys and play basketball. Its my escape. For those two hours, I dont think about anything but crossover dribbles, rebounds and jump shots. I lose myself in the moment with the rest of the guys. We dont talk about what happened that day or what went wrong. Its therapeutic.

What activities stop you from thinking about everything else when youre immersed in them? What things absorb you in the present moment? The key is to find something in which you have some skill or mastery, but which also challenges you. The balance between challenge and mastery leads to what psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls flow. Your brain and your body synchronize for an optimal experience. It doesnt matter what the activity is, it only matters that you do it. The more you engage in flow at work, in your free time and at home, the greater your happiness.

4. Contribute.

In what ways do you like to give? Your life is bigger than just you. When you give of yourselfyour gifts, time and talentyou make a difference for others. Whether its a small project at your kids school or a lifelong commitment to a cause, such as Hospice or Habitat for Humanity, make an effort to contribute to others.

Busy professionals can still find time to contribute. For example, Janice takes one hour a week to tutor a student. A full-time civil engineer, John, volunteers for Save Our Shores. Maya, a working mom, volunteers on fundraisers at her daughters school. I get to use my skills in a way that gives to these children. I have a lot of fun with the projects, I like to get involved, and I see the difference it makes in terms of providing things like art supplies for the kids so they can express their own budding interests.

Contribution can come from how you spend your free time and volunteer hours. It can also come from your chosen profession.

The highest form of giving is when you give freely, without expecting anything in return, rather than giving out of obligation, guilt or pressure. Its not about giving so your name will be framed on a plaque. Its giving for the sake of giving, because you care.

What can you do today to increase your happiness? Start by setting out to be happy. Then take a moment to remember and list the things that make you happy and start doing them. Engage in activities that put you in a state of flowperhaps running, playing music or sculpting. Also remember to contribute to others, even in simple, everyday ways, such as paying the toll for the person in the car behind you. Pursue and increase your happiness. Youll be happy you did.

There have been evidence from many ancient societies such as the Chinese, Greek, Maya, and Egyptian, reveals that kicking games were a part of those cultures. The modern game of soccer (for the Americans but football to the international scene) began in the 19th century in England, when a variety of football games developed, all of which involved both handling and kicking the ball. Australia, being one of the colonies of the United Kingdom, also developed an enjoyment and love for the said game.

However, the actual origin of the sport is still both in doubt and in dispute since there had been numerous accounts that the aborigine natives of Australia have already been playing the game even before the English came to colonize the area. On the other hand, some accounts also suggest that the convicts who were moved to Australia for their crimes and other immigrants started the game by playing some crude version of football. One thing that is certain though, in regards to the existence of football, or footy for some, in Australia is its rules which are better know as the Australian Rules or simply Aussie Rules.

It was in 1858 when Tom Wills and Henry Harrison formally codified ten rules from the various games that were being played in the colony. This said code has features common with the traditional English football, the Aboriginal game named Mam Grook and Gaelic football. The aim in solidifying the code for the Australian football, as stated Wills letter in Bell's Life in Victoria & Sporting Chronicle, is to keep the cricketers fit during winter. (Cricket is another different sport that is also being played in Australia.)

The Aussie rules are unique in a sense that both the ball and their playing field are oval in shape and in addition to that are the following Aussie rules:

  • No more than 18 players of each team are permitted to be on the field at any time. Up to four interchange (reserve) players may be swapped for those on the field at any time during the game.
  • There is no offside rule nor are there set positions in the rulesunlike many other forms of footballplayers from both teams disperse across the whole field before the start of play.
  • A game consists of four quarters. The length of the quarters can vary from 15 to 25 minutes in different leagues. In the AFL, quarters are 20 minutes, but the clock is stopped when the ball is out of play, meaning that an average quarter could last for 27 to 31 minutes.
  • Games are officiated by umpires.
  • Unlike other forms of football, Australian football begins similarly to basketball. After the first siren, the umpire bounces the ball on the ground, and the two ruckmen (typically the tallest man from each team), battle for the ball in the air on its way back down.
  • The ball can be propelled in any direction by way of a foot, clenched fist (called a handball or hand pass) or open-hand tap (unlike rugby football there is no knock-on rule) but it cannot be thrown under any circumstances.
  • A player may run with the ball but it must be bounced or touched on the ground at least every 15 meters. Opposition players may bump or tackle the player to obtain the ball and, when tackled, the player must dispose of the ball cleanly or risk being penalized for holding the ball. The ball carrier may only be tackled between the shoulders and knees. If the opposition player pushes a player in the back whilst performing a tackle, the opposition player will be penalized for a push in the back.
  • If a player takes possession of the ball that has traveled more than 15 meters from another player's kick, by way of a catch, it is claimed as a mark and that player may then have a free kick (meaning that that the game stops while he prepares to kick from the point at which he marked).
  • Apart from free kicks or when the ball is in the possession of an umpire for a ball up or throws in, the ball is always in dispute and any player from either side can take possession of the ball.

Australians like to do things their way so its little to no wonder how they were able to come up with a game that is internationally played and well-known but they still managed retain their own identity by incorporating their own sets of rules.

Now that you know the basics of one of the well-played game in the land down under, why dont you go outside and play some footy now?!

Golf is an expensive game, it is much more expensive than playing basketball or even baseball, you need to get some lessons and golf apparel, and on top of that you got the equipment which is pretty pricey. A good set of irons may cost a couple of hundred dollars without shocking anyone. This is the main reason why you should consider a golf club head cover.

This is the main reason that most golfers take very good care of their equipment, shoes and balls, it is simply too expensive to lose them or damage them for any reason. If you are a golfer you are probably aware of this, and you probably know that there are many things you can use to protect your golf clubs.

Golf club heads, in particular, have to be taken cared of more than any other golfing accessory. This is because this device is what gets in direct contact with the ball and spells a win or a loss. Thus, golfers take great pains protecting their golf clubs' heads with the right covers.

No matter how meticulous you are with protecting your golf club heads, rust is inevitable. However, you can slow the problem down by getting the right shield - a golf club head cover, that is. Club heads are manufactured using chrome-plated carbon steel. Constant use of the club exposes the steel to moisture, abrasion, and friction, resulting, eventually, to rust (and a poor hit).

Using golf club head covers to protect the iron will help keep the area dry and delay rust formation. Some people say using club head covers will only trap the moisture in. But there are different schools of thought to this practice, so it's really up to you which you prefer to follow.

For the stylish, funky golf club head covers could be a status symbol. Designer golf club head covers are available for sale to give your clubs that sophisticated look. If you're into fun stuff, you can also buy golf club head covers that have character designs. You can even have them custom-made, depending on what design you want. If you're a fan of Bugs Bunny, there isn't any reason why you couldn't have a Bugs Bunny golf club head cover if you want to.

Again, golf, while criticized as being a game for the frail sportsman, is actually an activity that calls for more effort than it seems - intellectual effort, that is. However, none of the precise calculations would bring any golf game justice if the tools of war are not in their best shape. Golf club heads are the most sensitive of all the golfing gear. Thus, they should be taken cared of and protected well with club head covers.

Golf clubs are something that ever golfer chooses along the path of his game and the years he spends on the golf course. The clubs are usually expensive and once the golfer has a few months of practice they become so personal that no one wants to even consider parting from his beloved 5 wood or 7 iron. Getting hit by a car is a less than pleasurable experience, whether you have a few tons of steel wrapped around you or you are just out running. I would like to share a little story from when I was a child.

When I was in middle school, my brother got rear-ended while he was waiting to turn into our driveway after school. After being forced into the other lane, he was side-swiped by a dump truck. The only seat left in his vehicle was the driver's seat. Had anybody else been in the car they would have probably been killed. My brother was out of the hospital that night, and the next day he was the high scorer in the basketball game.

That was the first day all year that I did not get a ride home from school from my brother. One year later to the day, I was out running near the school. I came out of a parking lot, turned onto the road, and began running along the shoulder while I waited for a utility van to pass me so that I could cross the street.

As the van passed me, I looked up the road and saw that it was all clear. I could see about a quarter mile until the road turned, and there was no traffic except for the van that was passing me. After it had gone by, I ran behind the van and started to cross to the other side.

In the time that it took for the van to cut off my vision of the road ahead and for me to run behind it, a woman had come around the turn and was speeding past the school towards me. I heard her slam on her breaks and as I looked up I knew exactly how a deer must feel when it looks into the headlight.

I distinctly remember thinking, "Oh s**t, I'm about to be hit by a car." That thought was immediately followed by, "That's probably not a good idea. I should try to get out of the way."

Those were my exact thoughts in the 2 or 3 seconds that I had before the car hit. I jumped for the snow banks in an effort to not get hit, and I almost made it. The car was going much faster than I was, though, and it weighed a whole lot more than I did. I was lucky in that I only caught my ankle on the bumper and got tumbled into the snow; the accident could have been a lot worse.

The woman that hit me was speeding, but it was not her fault that I got hit. I was not paying enough attention, and I made a stupid assumption about the road that I was on that came back to bite me.

In a way, though, I am glad that both that woman and I were idiots that day. I got hit by a car in a way that scared the hell out of me without causing me any permanent damage. I was running again in about a week.

There are very few situations where a runner is going to win any sort of conflict with an automobile. Those few situations tend to be less than legal and rarely involve the automobile being in motion. I may be a little paranoid, but I have assumed in almost every one of the 20,000+ miles that I have run since then that there was a car coming that might hit me.

What would happen to you and your family if a car hit you on your next run? When I got hit, I was not carrying any sort of identification with me. If I had hit my head and was unconscious, there was nobody running with me that could have told the paramedics who I was or who to contact about my care.

Whenever I run now, I try to follow a few simple rules.

  1. I run facing traffic unless there is a local law stating that I shouldn't.
  2. I make myself visible. Bright clothing, reflective gear, and flashing lights or headlamps are all tools that I might wear depending upon the conditions.
  3. I make myself predictable. I do not weave into and out of the road and I try to run as straight as possible.
  4. I keep my eyes up ahead of me and make sure that I am aware of both oncoming traffic and any traffic that might be coming off of side roads or driveways.
  5. I make eye contact with drivers who are stopped. If they won't look at me, then I will point at them until they do. I want to make sure that a driver knows that I am there before that driver pulls into me.
  6. I always carry some sort of identification with me when I run.
  7. I write emergency contact info onto the bib when I race using a pen or marker. If there is a space on the back for it then I will fill it in there, otherwise I will include an "ICOE" (in case of emergency) phone number on the front.

I recommend that you think about your own safety and that you try to be aware of your surroundings when you are running. I also recommend that you always carry some sort of identification with you in case the worst should happen.

Run safe.
