The Boston Celtics are heading for another outstanding season with Paul Pierce in the starting lineup. As the last practice before Wednesday night's season opener was over. Coach Doc Rivers said the team was better than it was last year but he is still concerned about consistency.

Rivers has dealt with new players each year as he enters his third season as coach. This season five of the 15 players are new. Only two, Pierce and Kendrick Perkins, are well known to the team because they were there even before Rivers arrived. Which is the main reason the concern is about how much consistency can there be between so many guys who haven't played a lot of NBA basketball. The Celtics will begin the season at home against the New Orleans Hornets, which could lead to a good start. Of Boston's first 10 games, seven are at home. The Celtics will be up against some new faces too with the Hornets, they added Peja Stojakovic, Tyson Chandler and Bobby Jackson in the off-season.

Home is an important fact to gain confidence, but it is more important for a team to realize that it does not mean that it will make or break their season. The Celtics are a team that's really just starting to come together, if that, and then the young guys are still growing so, obviously, if they could get off to a great start that would really set them up for the second half because they thought that is going to be a much better team by midpoint.

The Celtics won 12 fewer games last season than they did the previous season. Since they missed the playoffs, they acquired two new point guards, Sebastian Telfair in a trade with Portland and Rajon Rondo in the draft. They have great speed. Both have great vision and great feel and the thing I like most about them both is for 48 minutes we can play at the same speed.

The Celtics acquired Rondo for a future first-round pick from Phoenix, which took him with the 21st pick of the draft.

In NBA they really don't know if they're better until they go out there and play some games, but I definitely think the Celtics are more talented this season.

Chicago Bulls Interim Head Coach Jim Boylan has been given his first Head Coaching stint in the NBA, and has led the Bulls to a 16-21 record under tough circumstances. He believes he is "in control," but the team's appearance begs otherwise.

The Chicago Bulls are in turmoil, and not just by what you see in the standings. Players are in open revolt to Boylan's authority, missing practices, arriving late, talking back, acting up. The Bulls look unprofessional, on and off the court.

It is the Coach's job to tighten the reigns when necessary and the Bulls look like they have no one to do the job. There will be Bulls suitors this off-season, and I do not believe that Boylan has been strong enough to warrant becoming the next Head Coach of the Chicago Bulls.

The Bulls are a young and easily influenced group. They need an NBA Head Coach with experience, and someone that they know will be at the helm of the Bulls for several years, not just on an interim basis. Larry Brown's name has been bandied about for the Bulls job. Not sure if he is the answer, but Boylan to date is not either.

Chicago Bulls General Manager John Paxson has not given a sign one way or the other if Boylan will be back. I am not convinced that this stretch run, success or failure, will make much difference with concern to Boylan's future, unless the Bulls really catch fire and make a serious run through the NBA East. Don't bet on that happening.

With the win, the Los Angeles Lakers continue their winning ways. The Lakers have now won 11 of their last 12 games, and show no sign of letting up in the super-competitive NBA Western Conference. The win brings the Los Angeles Lakers to 42-18, while the Dallas Mavericks dropped to 39-21.

Jason Kidd hit for 15 points and threw in 11 assists in the loss for the Dallas Mavericks, while Dirk Nowitzki clicked for 30 points to go with 13 rebounds. The game was chippy at times, and got physical in spots. The days of the NBA Western Conference not playing defense, or at least not trying to play defense is long gone. If you do not play defense, and play defense well, you will not even make the playoffs at this rate in the NBA West.

Kobe Bryant out-dueled last year's NBA MVP, Dirk Nowitzki, and made it look easy. Kobe Bryant took a big step in my book towards earning his first NBA MVP award in the impressive win.
