Kobe Bryant is fighting to get the Lakers top-seed in the NBA West. Plenty of competition as well in the battle for his first NBA MVP.

Kobe Bryant is the unquestioned leader of the Los Angeles Lakers. Flirting with triple-doubles on a nightly basis, his cast is better than when the NBA season began, but it is still Kobe Bryant that leads things in LA. His first NBA MVP could be on the way, but Kevin Garnett and Chris Paul stand in Kobe's way.

The biggest threat to Kobe's MVP is Kevin Garnett. Garnett has displayed superior leadership, on and off the court, helping resurrect a morbid Boston Celtics franchise. Garnett, it feels, has been with the Celtics for 10 years, but in reality, it is his inaugural campaign in green and white. Garnett's on court play has been passionate and inspired, leading the Celtics to the best record in the NBA.

Best record in the NBA, via the conduit of the NBA East, is not as impressive as the best record in the NBA West, and that is where Chris Paul comes into the picture. Paul, a young but super-effective Point Guard for the New Orleans Hornets, is everything for the Hornets. His leadership at such a young age is remarkable, drawing comparisons to a young Isiah Thomas (on court, not in GM capacity, thank you), and even a bit of Magic Johnson for flavor.

Although the NBA MVP award is supposed to be for one year's body of work, the reality is that a player's reputation does factor in, everything else being equal. That said, Kobe Bryant is due, but Kevin Garnett will have a say as well.
