Goalrilla Hoop Light

If you want to keep playing after the sun goes down, you need the Goalrilla Basketball Hoop Light to brighten your court. These two 500 Watt Halogen basketball hoop lights are specifically engineered to give you enough illumination to pass, shoot, and dribble through the night, without ever blinding you when you look up for a shot. Its the perfect light for anyone who doesnt want the end of the day to mean the end of the game.

Basketball does not just have to be strictly rule regulated play on an indoor wooden court. There are actually many different variations on the game that bring basketball to a whole new level.

Variety is one of the things that makes basketball such a popular sport. With all the ways to play the game it is no wonder that people all over the world are playing the game. That's true no matter who they are, how old they are or what limitations they may physically have.

Game Variation 1: Wheelchair Basketball

Wheelchair basketball, as the name suggests, is played in wheelchairs. The chairs are specially designed so they move quickly and easily down the court. They also are made so players can be agile, much like players in traditional basketball.

Wheelchair basketball is a serious sport that is regulated by the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF).

Game Variation 2: Water Basketball

Water basketball, again as the name suggests, is played in water. It can be recreational or as a team regulated sport. In water basketball the rules are a little different. The rules for water basketball combine rules for traditional court basketball and water polo. There is, obviously, no dribbling involved in water basketball.

Game Variation 3: Beach Basketball

Beach basketball is played on the beach and is quite different than other types of basketball. It is not as strict and much more of a physical game than basketball.

Beach basketball is played on a circular court with no backboard on the hoop. There is no dribbling because it is too difficult on the sand. The ball is moved down the court instead by passing or 2 steps. There is also no out of bounds in beach basketball.

Game Variation 4: Informal Basketball

Informal basketball really is not an actual name for a type of basketball, but it is used here to simply describe the type of basketball that most people play - basketball where you are just playing for the fun of the sport. The best kind!

Informal play can have any rules you like, as long as everyone playing agrees to them. There may not even be any organized play, but rather people simply making baskets and having fun.

Basketball is a very flexible sport. It can be played almost anywhere and in anyway you can imagine. In fact, it probably has been played almost everyway imaginable because it is such a popular sport. The thing about basketball that remains the same is making the basket. Every variation of the sport involves a ball and basket with the ultimate goal being to get the ball through the basket to score.

So, no matter how you play basketball it is the right way as long as you have the ball and hoop. You can play whatever way feels best for you with whatever rules you want. You can play with as many players as you want on whatever type of court you want. The bottom line is that you just have fun while you are doing it.

Pickup Basketball: A Guide to America\'s Favorite Game

The sports, comedy, documentary and "how-to" genres combine with hilarious illustrations to enlighten and entertain readers. If you are a basketball player or know one, this is a must-have!
Customer Review: Pickup Basketball, A Guide to America's Favorite Game
Hilarious writing and illustrations make up a book that any pickup player can relate to and find humor in. Great charactures of "player-types", or guys you inevitably run into while playing. Points out the annoying, but oh-so-true features of the game we love to play....you may even find yourself type-cast in the book! A great entertainment-value book that does'nt take hours to read and gives some funny tips on life outside the court for sport-guys

Many people who play basketball want to learn how to jump higher so that they can be the one in the game that is counted on to help the team win. Whether that is by getting hold of that rebound or making a slam dunk as the buzzer rings jumping high can truly help you in your game. But to jump high doesn't come naturally to some and so you have to work at it. If you are unsure of how to do that then let me be the one to help you out.

You see, the exercises that are needed to help you in learning how to jump higher are ones that don't generally require any kind of special equipment or gym fees. The exercises that I find to be helpful are the ones that you can do pretty much any time and anywhere. Whether while on the couch watching the game or when you are walking across the room, you can be doing things to tone your calves and other muscles. A very small change that you can make is to attach ankle weights for when you go for a jog or if you are simply cleaning out the garage. No need to add a lot of weight, if you can add two pounds or five pounds it doesn't matter so long as you are doing what is necessary to build up your leg strength.

There are of course other things that will help you learn how to jump higher. You are going to think it silly to say this but something that will really help to build up your calves and other leg muscles is skipping. Skipping will probably not be the first thing to come to mind when you start thinking of way to build up leg strength but it should be. To see what I am saying, imagine yourself skipping and think of the leg muscles that are involved to get you off the ground. Of course you can't just dally about and expect results, each time you spring from the ground use your toes to take you higher each and every time. Not only will it build up the necessary muscles but it will also help to work others as well.

Jogging is another way that can help you in your game. Of course you can't just go on a three mile sprint and expect to come back alive but if you start easy and work your way up to the distance your want you will see an overall change in yourself. Your lungs will hold more air, your legs will be stronger and your body will begin changing because of the different muscles that are used. It will be something that can help you as you learn how to jump higher as the muscles that will be worked will be ones to help you achieve your goal.

Raising yourself onto your toes and then back down will work an amazing amount of muscles, especially your calves. Working the quads is also something that is very important and that can be done by doing the squats that we all know and love.

What is important is realizing that anything done to an extreme can take all the fun out of it. But if you work in moderation you will allow your body to work change for the good in a way that it can tolerate.

Boston and Detroit are the two best teams in the Eastern Conference and for the most part they are evenly matched. So far, Boston has struggled in the NBA Playoffs having to go to a seventh game in both rounds. Detroit, on the other hand, has avoided going to a seventh game in either round and ended their series vs. Orlando in five even winning the last two games without Chauncey Billups.

Detroit is one of if not the most balanced teams in the NBA. Offensively, they are able to score inside and outside. Their bigs, Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess have the ability to score in the post with their back to the basket and can also face up. Tayshaun Prince is very versatile and has a high basketballIQ. Their starting backcourt of Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton is one of the best in the league. Billups has great size as a point guard and uses it to take smaller defenders in the post. Hamilton moves as well as anybody without the ball and is excellent at catching and shooting.

On the defensive end, Detroit has been near the top of the NBA the last few years. This season, they ranked 4th in defensive rating (points given up per 100 possessions). They have excellent individual defenders in Billups, Prince, McDyess, and Wallace. They don't give you anything easy and force you to execute. They rebound well and held teams to a FG% of .437.

Boston is loaded with star power. Offensively, they feature three offensive players who rank near the top at their respective positions. Kevin Garnett is one of the premier bigs in the game; he is a tough cover in the post and is an outstanding defender. Paul Pierce has great size for a small forward and can score in a variety of ways. Ray Allen has struggled this postseason, but he is more than capable of lighting you up from the perimeter.

Defensively, they are statistically the best in the NBA this season. They put good pressure on the ball and have excellent helpside defense. Garnett is one of the best bigs at defending the pick and roll and erases mistakes. They play well as a unit and play great transition defense.

This series in will come down to who can get more easy baskets. Both teams would prefer to play in the halfcourt. Whoever wins the battle on the glass and the turnover battle will in advance to the finals.

Its a city on the water, and accordingly a city of beaches. From every vantage point within the city, you can see water and the wonders that await you there. The beaches on the Puget Sound are accordingly different than the fine sand and big surf of resort towns though. In Seattle you have real beaches, beaches of open grassy areas and drift wood, seaweed and seagulls. But of course with so many beaches throughout a city surrounded by water, which are better to visit than the rest. Here are a list of must visit beaches in the Seattle area.

1. Golden Gardens Nestled at the bottom of a winding, wondrous drive in Ballard, over the train tracks and down some stairs, Golden Gardens is an ideal spot to spend an afternoon in the summer, just walking and enjoying the cool Puget Sound air. There are a dozen or more picnic benches, an indoor events hall, a wide open grass area for sporting, and various spots throughout to have bonfires when the sun goes down. Just hidden enough to find a good spot and enjoy the view. If its warm enough and youre feeling in a swimming mood, this is one of the few places where you can freely jump into the ocean without fear of stepping on a giant rock or driftwood.

2. Matthews Beach The site of Seattles annual Polar Bear event on January 1, Matthews Beach is an open, park surrounded swimming venue a wonderful place to take kids for a quick dip without worrying about the tides and runs of the ocean. If you have a mind to have a picnic theres space for that too, and its open year round for those of you who dont necessarily need to go into the water.

3. Myrtle Edwards At the north end of Seattles piers is Myrtle Edwards Beach, an ideal spot to watch one of Seattles many fireworks displays ever year. Directly behind the Seattle PI Building, youll find its not full of amenities, but when the sun starts to set and the ocean lights up, its one of the most beautiful places in the city to be. The beach itself is sparse, and littered with rocks, but the area above is clear and perfect for laying down blankets and lounging in the sun for a day.

4. Alki Beach Alki is one of the places youre most likely to think of when you picture a beautiful sunny day on the water in Seattle. Stretching from Alki Point to Duwamish Head on Elliott Bay, the 2.5 mile stretch of beach is perfect for a long walk or a jog any day of the year. The widened path through the area is perfect for rollerblading, dog walking, or just appreciating the spectacular view of the Puget Sound and the Olympic mountains.

5. Green Lake Its not a beach on the ocean, but its the most popular water front destination in the city. Any day of the year, rain or shine youll see people doing their daily laps around the lakes spacious paths. Walking dogs, jogging, roller blading, or just talking with a friend, the paths around Green Lake are a perfect stop for anyone in need of a good exercise. You can rent and take out on the lake paddle boats or stop by and play volleyball in the sanded out beach area on the Eastern shore. Theres a community center with a swimming pool and a basketball court, as well as an outdoor court almost always swarming with opponents for you and your friends. If youre feeling hungry, you can simply cross the street and visit any of a number of enticing restaurant choices in the Green Lake area. Surrounded with the beautiful towering evergreens, the park is by far one the must visit locales in Seattle.

In this article I am going to explain strength training exercises to increase your vertical jump. Strength training is an important aspect of vertical leap development because your raw strength is the foundation for many important qualities you need to excel in to jump high. Strength is the backbone for your reactive ability, speed, power, endurance, agility, etc. Since it effects so many vital components of vertical jumping, it is paramount that you develop it as best you can.

Strength Training Exercises:

Squats, lunges, leg extensions, leg curls, and calf raises are great exercises to help increase your body's overall strength. Of these, squats do wonders when they are performed properly. They really tear up the muscles that are involved in vertical jumping such as your quadriceps, glutes, hamstring, and calves.

Important Points to Note:

Your "maximum strength" (the amount of force your muscles can exert independent of time) is what strength training will develop. Vertical jumping directly deals with "functional strength" (the amount of force your muscles can exert in short bursts of time). To effectively increase your vertical, you must improve your maximum strength while blending that into functional training.

Plyometrics are such exercises that develop your functional strength. Therefore your vertical jump regiment should include both strength training and plyometrics. The catch here is that everyone has different body compositions that require different levels of training with strength and plyometrics. Some people need more training and less plyometrics, others need the opposite - it all depends on your body type. I see people all the time training with the wrong mix of the two and wonder why they aren't seeing the results they hoped for. You need to have a program that will tailor your exercises to your unique body composition.

What is your body type and what kind of exercises will you benefit the most from? Many vertical jump programs out today have tests to determine your body type and will tailor a program to that. Click here to find out the 2 main categories of body types and to read our unbiased reviews of the top vertical jump program out today.

The 2007 NBA finals will be great for sports investors, although it will go against many of the traditional rules weekend warrior bettors may be used to.

To start, large spreads are usually indicative of large market teams. The spread for game one Cle@SA is 7.5 points with the home team favored. Considering the finals are a showdown between the final survivors of each conference, 7.5 points is monumental.

Lets take a look at reason why SA may cover this spread.

1) They are considered the better team and easily have the better pedigree. SA, led by Tim Duncan who is widely considered a top 10 NBA player (if not higher) leads a team of savvy veterans who have been there, done that. Yet, they do not hold the same swagger other dynasties have (and yes, in todays day and age the Spurs are as much of a dynasty as the Patriots). In fact, since they are often ignored, they continue to play the game hard, as if they have a chip on their collective shoulders. This team never gives an inch, and takes every facet of the game seriously.

2) Its early in the series, and though an older team, they have had ample rest since defeating Utah to recuperate. Add to the fact that Cle has just come off a grueling series, and not just physically, but mentally. 2 losses by 3 points. One double overtime. And now all the hype surrounding them. That type of media and fan frenzy can wear down any team, but is even more the case when it comes to a younger team like the Cavs.

3) Beyond Duncan, they have a series of players who consistently show up in big games. Sometimes their heroics are staggered between them, but often times they show up all together. Duncan can have a bad game and hit a double-double, but it will be Parker, Ginobili, Bowen, Finley, Horry and the rest of the crew that simply will continue to pour it on. How many times has any one of those guys come through for their team? The bottom line, if any one of them is on their game, 7.5 points is a cake spread.

4) This is the finals, there is no need to conserve any more energy. SA saw what the rest of the world did, that the Cavs can play defense, rebound, and score in bunches when needed. And even moreso, they never give up. Teams like that are dangerous to stick around and the leadership and staff in SA will not make such a mistake.

Now, before you rush out and place your wagers though, lets look at reasons why Cle will beat the spread.

1) 7.5 points is a lot of points. Especially against a team playing full of confidence and was just crowned the Kings of the East. During the regular season, Cle easily beat this spread in fact, they beat SA straight up, both at home and on the road. In those 2 games they were 5.5 and 3.5 point underdogs.

2) LeBron is LeBron. When was the last time he had a bad game? Sure, his 20 points and 14 rebounds were not close to his previous performance, but I think I even saw a kitchen sink thrown at him from the Detroit bench. Meaning he controls a game both directly and indirectly. Mind you, it is conceivable the SA defense could shut him down and then the Cavs role players shoot bricks at an ice covered hoop all night, but this is the biggest series of all their lives and they have nothing to lose. No one expected them here, yet an entire region is now on their bandwagon. LeBron will make an impact, and that impact is enough to bridge a 7.5 point spread.

3) The Cavs are hot. They are 21-6-1 against the spread in their last 28 road games and 38-15-1 ATS in their last 54 game over all. Of the last 10 times they were underdogs, 80% of those cashed in profits for their fans. Take trends as you will, because honestly, you are only as good as your next game. But their last game was pretty good, as were the games before that. The bottom line is not only did they beat the Spurs straight up, twice this season, but they beat or tied the spread nearly 79% of the time on the road, and 80% of the time as underdogs in their recent history. Yet they are larger underdogs than before?

4) A quick glance will show SA as leaders in almost every statistical category, but a closer look will show the numbers are closer than it seems. SA has a decided edge in playoff ppg as a team, 97.9 versus the Cavs 90.9, but SA has played more offense orientated teams Denver, Utah and the Suns all push offense over defense. The Cavs meanwhile faced both Wash and NJ who definitely are capable of scoring, but not once were at the level of the Suns and only Wash came close to Denvers season output. Then, add in they played a season strong defense team in Detroit, and thought Ill let the fans argue what conference was better, the bottom line is SA played against teams that rely more on offense, and therefore allow more offense. They have not yet played a defensive team of the Cavs caliber. Which leads us to our next stat, rpg: SA=39.8, CLE=43.9. Cle has averaged more rpg against opponents who shot less. Which means they hit the boards significantly harder than SA. Looking at the numbers closer, 7.5 points seems like the lock of the year.

There you are, reasons and rationale why either team will make the 7.5 spread. You are now armed with all the knowledge you need to make a decision. However, before you go and lay down all your money one way or the other. Take a look at the series as a whole. The truth is, as far as the media is concerned, the Spurs will win this series in 5 or 6 games. And you know what? Given their deeper talent, familiarity with pressure and leadership, this should be true. But as sports investors, who wins this series is secondary. We dont get to hold any trophies. But like the multimillionaires, we too can earn nice financial bonuses off this series.

However Game 1 pans out, remember, the sportsbooks/bookies goal will be to make as much money as possible. And though you should have the same goal, they are in control. They have between 4 and 7 games to adjust the lines based on betting trends, shifting home courts and injuries, momentum of the series and more. Meaning, take 1 game at a time and only invest what you can afford to lose.

Provided by http://www.investingsports.com. Offering a 200% money back guarantee on investment tips. You now have the information to make a decision for yourself, and though both sides can be rationalized to make the spread, only one team will do it. Want to know which one? This article is not for quitters. It is for those of us who have a need to be successful in life and business. If you look closely at all great organizations, you will find a common trait among them and the top one being a second-to-none work ethic.

But, why do some of us have it and some do not?

I believe it's a matter of understanding one simple fact of life and that is "Success Is A Choice." We either choose to be successful or we do not.

When I taught Executive Leadership courses I did not use prepackaged material. Instead, I followed a leadership style I firmly believe in; Pitino's belief in the idea of free will.

Rick Pitino and I share similar beliefs, and although I am not a basketball fan, he is my favorite Coach. You may remember he led the Kentucky Wildcats to a spectacular 1996 national championship, and here's a quotation I still use when building strong teams.

"What's true on the basketball court is true in business and in life. You want to succeed? Okay, then succeed. Deserve it. How? Outwork everybody in sight. Sweat the small stuff. Go the extra mile. But whatever it takes put your heart and soul into everything you do. Leave it all-out on the court."

"But that won't happen unless you choose to make it happen.

Success is not a lucky break. It is not a divine right. It is not an accident of birth. SUCCESS IS A CHOICE."

Now, please imagine 30 CEOs and VPs sitting around a large conference table in Washington, DC. And, most of them were there because they felt they had to be and not because they wanted to be.

Imagine still that I'm standing in front of them, poised and ready to launch great missiles of wisdom, to an unaccommodating group of griping Executives.

Imagine again hearing me begin the session with this statement:

"You do not deserve success! I do, but you do not."

As you can predict, there was an insistent silence and I could almost hear the angry comments exploding in their collective minds. "Who does she think she is!" I grinned engagingly and continued.

"I deserve success because I believe success is a conscious choice we make. Let me see a show of hands if you're with me on that statement." No show of hands in this crowd.

"So, who would like to tell me why I'm wrong?" I asked.

"I'll tell you flat-out you're wrong. I've been leading people for over 30 years and I'm here to tell you not everyone can be successful!" Smug 'n Loving It retorts.

"Can you tell me why you believe that is true?" I respond making notes on the whiteboard sideways. (Never turn your back on a hostile crowd).

"Sure. There are lots of reasons.

1.) Maybe they did not have enough education,

2.) or, frontline management experience, or

3.) support at home or in the workplace. I've known all of those to cause failure in folks."

"I see. Well, let's examine the first one: success = education. Our premise now becomes if I do not have enough formal education I cannot be successful. Right?" Everyone nods their agreement.

"Similarly, I cannot do well if I do not have frontline management experience. Is that right?" A few heads nod.

"Lastly, it becomes I cannot thrive if I do not have
satisfactory support at home or in the workplace. So,
there is our belief. Does anyone see anything out of place
in our argument?"

It soon becomes obvious to them these are illogical foundations when viewed in black and white.

Quickly, Mr. Smug 'n Loving It begins to tap dance. "I meant those are reasons that contribute to underachievement", he snapped. All heads move up and down at his astute Fred Astaire recovery.

"I agree they are often thought to be contributing causes; however, the question on the table is whether we believe success is a conscious choice we make. Do we?" The majority of heads bob and weave grudgingly when Smug 'n Loving' It pipes in again.

"Sure. I'm just saying those 3 factors help decide our
success. That's all." I smile graciously and we move on.

"Great. Let's now turn to some of the common denominators we find in successful people," and I list them on the board.

1) Builds Self-Esteem

* Everyone likes to feel valued and good leaders promote
self-worth within their teams.

* Overachievers have high confidence. Conversely, Underachievers are often unfocused and easily frustrated. They tend to blame environmental reasons on their failures, and they are difficult to work with.

2) Sets Demanding Goals

3) Is Always Positive

4) Establishes Good Habits

5) Masters The Art Of Communication

6) Learns From Role Models

7) Thrives On Pressure

8) Be Ferociously Persistent

9) Learn From Adversity

10) Survive Success

** When you achieve success, don't sit back and think the work is over. The work is never over. True success is replicated; copied and constant.

"This list represents the basic principle that we must first deserve our success. And, when we consistently practice these 10 steps we become deserving of our reward".

"Clearly, everyone in this room will agree they do these 10 steps unconsciously." All 30 Execs smile their approval and we break off into groups to further define our action plans.

And, on that note, I will stop since this is an article and not a book about how to lead teams to victory.

However, it doesn't matter what you are trying to achieve: lose weight, stop smoking, become rich, become famous, become happy, become...you fill in the blank.

"But, that won't happen unless you choose to make it happen. Success is not a lucky break. It is not a divine right. It is not an accident of birth. SUCCESS IS A CHOICE."

If you first earn the right to be successful, you will become successful.

I will share with you on leaving, Mr. Smug 'n Loving It generously came up and shook my hand and said, "Dev, I will follow you anywhere."

Follow me. I will show you how to succeed online, in life, and in traditional business practices as well.

Dev Hobbins' Executive Management experience includes holding positions such as VP of Operations in the software/hard support industries, Ops-Call Centers, Academic Dean at the college level and Senior Quality & Training Director in the Telecommunications field.

The NBA and its players represent a game of extraordinary skill, athleticism and grace, and, for good or bad, set an example for the entire basketball world, on the court and off of it. Like everything there must be balance between the positive side of things and the negative and it is even better if the positive side outweighs the negative.

On the NBA we have on the positive side, the players passion for the game, their commitment to the fans and respect for the history and tradition of the game. In regards to the negative, while the NBA has worked meticulously to eliminate fighting from the game, incidents such as that Saturday night at Madison Square Garden between the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks show the public there is still much more to be done, or maybe tell us that the solutions are not being the ideal ones.

As a result NBA scoring leader Carmelo Anthony was suspended for 15 games and six other players were penalized as commissioner David Stern came down hard on both teams after the Nuggets and Knicks brawled at Madison Square Garden.

It is a shame for the fun of the game but the NBA is in its obligation to take the strongest possible measures to avoid such spectacles in the future and to make a statement to all who follow the game of basketball that they understand their obligations and take them seriously.

The main concern should be for the safety of the players and the fans, because when things such as these get out of hand you cannot predict or project where they're going to go.

So how do you get started? Decide what direction you think will most appeal to your employees. Think like a parent: What programs are you interested in offering for their security and welfare? Who are you looking to attract? Answer those questions and then plan, plan, plan. Your time planning will lead to measurable goals over time and keep you out of trouble.

Start slow and maximize the perceived kindness of "the company." Always implement changes at a manageable pace. This will give you time to adjust your budget and ensure that you have parallel goals with your employees. If the benefits program you implement begins harming profitability you will need time to turn things around before you get in over your head.

In the beginning it could be as simple as focusing on your environment. A fun place to work is tops for most job seekers. Having a good time at work can be of greater interest than top pay in today's labor market. Most people would be satisfied even making a little less per hour if they enjoyed their job more. Try allowing space on your work site for a pool table, ping pong table, basketball hoop, etc. Giving employees time off during the day to blow off a little steam is another simple way to offer something and keep expenses low. Give your workers breaks on company pay for an extra 15 minutes a day (these breaks would be in addition to the regular time off required by law). Allow them to play miniature golf around the office or play Pictionary in the board room. These "games" can build a fun team atmosphere and they don't cost much.

Don't stop there! Today's workforce will want more. Benefits are a significant portion of my total compensation as a manager. I work in a fun environment, but many of my own employees take the company benefits programs for granted. We have some great perks as well. In reality, they may not understand all the company benefits that are offered. So be prepared to explain what you do provide. Employees may whine "ABC business down the street is starting new hires at $1.29 more per hour... How come I don't make that?" At the same time, they may have benefits with a net worth far greater than what the other company may be offering. Your pitch: "We give you more in the form of healthcare, vacation, sick pay, disability insurance, and peace of mind. We won't be closed in a year."

As the owner of a small business, don't think because it is not on their mind, or they are not bringing it up, it can be ignored. You should be chatting about the programs with your employees. Remember it is all in the presentation. Be prepared to list every perk, benefit, or alternative benefits program offered when a job candidate inquires.

Once you're ready to ramp up and offer a more costly program: profit sharing, tuition assistance, or health benefits, set your goals and then get an expert involved. Again planning is critical before you enter in this arena. There are laws that may apply as well as significant barriers to entry involved in starting one of these programs. That being said, many providers of healthcare and investment planners will help model a plan tailored for your unique business. They can offer solutions to get you started, once you know your goals.

The key to an effective benefits program is to know your people. What would they really appreciate? Focus on what will provide you the best bang for your buck. Often it is the smallest things and least expensive things, like more time off with their family that will win them over.

9,223,372,036,854,780,000, the number of possible combinations in the 63 game NCAA college basketball tournament. The experts say it's more likely for one person to be struck by lightning twice on the same sunny day than winning some state lotteries, so I can't really imagine what kind of hyperbole people could come up with for filling out a perfect bracket with more than nine hexillion possible combos.

Maybe - filling out a perfect bracket; less likely than Duke not choking in the first two rounds and advancing to the second week of play. It's alright Coach K, you'll get that 70th career tournament win someday.

Filling out a perfect bracket; less likely than Memphis hitting their free throws at the end of a close game.

Or my personal favorite - filling out a perfect bracket; less likely than underdogs going 4-0 at a tournament site in the first round, including 2 #12 seeds and 2 #13 seeds.

This year, in an effort to get more people to fill out brackets on their site, Yahoo! offered five million dollars for a perfect bracket, and of course could still feel comfortable that their money would stay safe in the bank. Face it, I could offer my first-born and the right to have a personal flying carpet, and a perfect 63 game bracket would still never come to be.

But this weekend, all of you lazy workers looking for a big break may have caught one. Yahoo! is offering one million dollars for a perfect second-chance bracket. Starting with the sweet sixteen and only fifteen remaining games in the tourney, there is now a much more manageable 32,768 possible combinations in this bracket. You know what that means? For the next two days you need to fill out brackets every waking moment you are available; fill them out during breakfast, during work, during lunch, during class, when your wife is trying to have a conversation with you, and before you go to sleep. Pick the obvious games and pick the upsets; make sure to mix and match crazy combinations. And because I opened your eyes to these great new odds, please feel obligated to give me a fraction of your newly found fortune when you pick that coveted perfect second chance bracket.

Most of what I submit to this website can be found at my blog http://sportsnationblog.blogspot.comPlease feel free to go check it out and take a visit. I love feedback from my readers so if you want to tell me something then email me at sportsnationblog@gmail.com

A big part of what I do as a shooting coach is to ... Teach people to coach themselves and others! The Self-Coaching part of that is huge.

Its one thing to teach people what theyre supposed to do and then judge them on how well they do it. Its another to teach them to know what theyre doing and where they want to get (the most effective way to perform an action, for example) and how to get there. Once they know, then they can coach themselves. They reach a state of awareness where they know what works and what doesnt work. They have a sense of all the possibilities, not just the one action you (or they) think they should know.

In the teaching I got from my golf mentors, I learned that when you can distinguish an action (definition: to perceive or know the difference in; to characterize; to perceive clearly; to make a distinction, a distinction being the act of making or keeping something distinct or unmistakable), then you are free to self-correct, free to coach oneself, free to learn...

ITS IN THE PRACTICE!

Its in the practice of a skill where kids will become great at anything. Its not in games, though occasionally breakthroughs can occur there. Rather its in the hours spent, often by oneself, working on things, that the greatest development occurs. A lot of people are aware that parents these days are too involved with their kids activities, trying to help them achieve things faster and greater. One of the results from that is too many games at young ages. As Ive written before, if youre always testing yourself to see how good you are (like in games), theres less time to play and develop. Its like pulling a flower up by the roots to see how well its growing. Games are for performance, not for trying out different things. Failure is less forgiven when score is being kept. A few kids excel under the pressure of constant games, but the vast majority are hurt by it.

The Swish Method is about learning and (self) coaching. Teach kids to make their own distinctions and you teach them to be independent and self-reliant. Thats one of my biggest goals. The other is to help train coaches to coach shooting more powerfully, to teach them how to empower kids in the process of finding their own distinctions. For coaches, it starts with them being learners. As in learning, when you can distinguish things as a coach, then you will know how to teach others.

Tom Nordland is a shooting expert and coach from California via Minnesota. His videos, coaching and writings are inspiring a Renaissance (a rebirth, a revival) in shooting around the world as players and coaches are taught the things that really matter in shooting. A great shooter as a youth, Tom was given a gift of seeing shooting like few have ever seen it. He sees the essence of great shooting and how to get there. The good news is that its very simple. The few great shooters of today and yesterday mastered simple things, not complicated motions. Improved shooting is now possible for everybody in the game, and mastery is available to those who sincerely dedicate themselves to it. Visit Toms website (http://www.swish22.com) to read of his background and his articles and newsletters, and to view the remarkable endorsements and amazing testimonials for this approach to shooting.

Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith got his first challenge of the first year at the Badgers this past Sunday, however Wisconsin's defense showed to be stronger as Minnesota lost 63-47.

"We knew it was going to be a tough battle for us playing against a team that is ranked second in the nation defensively," Smith said. "They showed it today because we had our lowest (point) production I think all season."

It surely did not make it any easy that Wisconsin shot at 58 percent in the first 20 minutes taken the lead of 39-23 at the halftime, although Minnesota by no means got its offense against UW's aggressive defensive attack, shooting only 36 percent during the game.

Minnesotas's defense slowed Wisconsin down in the second half, but the 16-point lead was better against a team that forced 18 turnovers to Minnesota. "The defense is where we get it started because if our shots are not falling down you can always go back and play good defense," UW's Trevon Hughes said.

Minnesota by no means didn't find a method to stop the sophomore guard, who scored 20 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the field and 6 free throws. "He's just a physical guy. He can get to the line and control the tempo," Smith said of Hughes, who packs 193 pounds on his 6-foot frame. "You aren't going to take the ball off him much, but we did force a few turnovers on him today. Again, he made shots."

Smith alleged "Wisconsin is a very athletic team, which makes its defense hard to score against. UW held Minnesota's top three scorers -- Dan Coleman, Lawrence McKenzie and Spencer Tollackson -- to just 20 points."

"It was either guys not moving to get open or they are just that talented where they can get up and block shots," Smith said. "They blocked five shots and most of those were going to the basket."

Minnesota adds up eight to 10 really horrible shots in the paint, where the Minnesota Gophers were defeated 30-24. The talented sophomore Damian Johnson ended with 10 points; he was given plenty of
recognition for their defensive potential.

"They stayed down on our jump shots," he said. "They stayed down on our layups and they made us go over them, so it was very difficult when 6-11 guys, 6-9 guys try to challenge shots and stand there with their hands up. It's just difficult to go over them". This is Wisconsin's 12 time win in their previous 13 games against Minnesota that was trying to do a statement against one big rival.

"We let them get to us," Johnson said. "That's just too hard to come back from a 16-point deficit to win the game."

The most hyped high school basketball player ever had very little chance of meeting the expectations of basketball fans who were drooling over the prospect of another player of Jordanesque proportions. The hype was so out of control he was put on the cover of Sports Illustrated (talk about hurting someone's chances, i.e., the curse) when he was a senior in high school with the headline "The Chosen One." It made it sound as if God had decided to have a second son (it was a little harder finding a virgin this time), had anointed him to save the basketball world, and that God had decided he was destined to become the best basketball player ever. Tall order for a human being. Unbelievable pressure for a mere mortal. How unfair for the basketball scouts and the media to do this to a teenager. Well, "The King" has arrived and he may be ready for his throne even sooner than expected. This sounds like a made-up story: an overhyped athlete who actually, by all accounts, exceeds his expectations. No, this is reality. This is the enchanting world of (you guessed it ) Lebron James. Welcome to his kingdom and his fairy tale like existence.

Because of the hype, I was practically "forced" to watch to watch the McDonald's High School All-star Basketball Game when Lebron was a senior in high school. I nearly fell off my couch four times. And those were just his passes. Four of the most spectacular passes I had ever seen. All in one game by one person. (By a high schooler, no less!) Oh, yes, there were also some great steals, drives, and of course, a couple of high-flying dunks. The most obvious cliche came into mind immediately, "a man among boys", and this was a gross understatement. A teenager with a body out of Greek mythology (only taller). Michael Jordan with Magic Johnson's passing. Oh my God (pun intended)! Although it hardly seemed possible, the scouts and the media had actually understated his abilities.

But, how would he do against the big boys -- two levels higher? As expected, James went straight to the pros and his first televised game was hyped to the max. Again, I was "forced" to watch. Before the game, the biggest knock on him was his lack of an outside shot. Like a legend in the making, he rose to the occasion, and made it look as if it was his strong suit. Okay, it was only one game of shooting, but that was not the point. Lebron, "The Chosen One", "King James", was making a statement: I can handle the pressure, and any weakness you see in my game will be corrected with hard work and determination. He was letting the world know he had mental toughness to go along with his ridiculous talent and athletic ability. Not since Jordan hit the game winning jumper as a freshman against Georgetown in the NCAA Final with 16 seconds left had such a significant statement been made in the sports world (or, at least, the basketball world). After the game, I told all my friends and acquaintances who were sports fans that the only question now is: Will he become the greatest basketball player of all time or only the 2nd greatest basketball player of all time (after Jordan -- a perfect basketball player if there was one)? This was a bold statement after witnessing only one pro game and considering all the great players and careers that had preceded him. (And almost blasphemy coming from a huge Jordan fan like myself, but not really since I said 1st OR 2nd greatest all-time.) Today, June 3rd, 2007, the day after James has just led "his" Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in just his 4th season, I feel exactly the same way. If you are a basketball fan, by now you have heard that the NBA playoffs are "where legends are made." Well, get ready, because it will be shocking if James does not become a legend in the next 10 or 12 years of the NBA playoffs and take us on the best sports ride since Jordan.

But, before we get carried away (and it is hard not to with James), Lebron has a lot of work to do and a lot to accomplish before he will be considered the 1st or 2nd best basketball player of all time. First and foremost, James needs to become a great defender. What made Jordan the greatest was that he was the best offensive player ever and probably the second best defensive player ever (after Bill Russell). James, while a pretty good defender (and he played some great defense last night ), is nowhere near that right now. However, lest we forget, he is currently only 22 years old. Secondly, his free throw shooting needs to improve -- he struggled this year, shooting only 70%. That is not going to cut it. (Jordan, in case you're wondering, shot 84% for his career.) For his career, James has shot 73% and has shot 77% in the playoffs so far this year. Better, but not great, and I have seen him miss a lot of free throws late in the fourth quarter in his career. Currently, James is a good, but not a great shooter (46% career, Jordan 50%; 3-point shooting for James is .327, coincidentally, Jordan shot the identical percentage.) Up until the end the regular season last year (spring of 2006), James was not good at closing out and winning close games. This is a learned skill and perhaps a couple of years of college would have helped in this area. However, whether James learned this skill in college or the pros, this skill takes time to learn. Even Jordan, who turned out to be the master at it, did not have this skill very early in his career. Besides, in game 5 against the Pistons, Lebron seemed to have it all figured it out, scoring 30 of his team's 31 points (his teammates were 0 for 10 shooting during that stretch) in the Cavaliers' double-overtime win. James was remarkable, and now the only question is: Can he do it on a consistent basis?

Both James and Jordan are excellent rebounders for guards (6.7 and 6.2 per game, respectively), while James is the better passer (6.4 and 5.3 assists per game, respectively). Jordan was an excellent and probably underrated passer, but James is already one of the 5 best passers (along with Johnson, Larry Bird, Steve Nash, and John Stockton) in the NBA since 1969 (when I started watching pro basketball). Now, if only he had better players around to receive his wonderful, unselfish passes. (He did have lots of help last night, as rookie Daniel Gibson scorched the Pistons in game 6 with 31 points, 19 in the fourth quarter including 5 of 5 threes. It was only one game, however, and it will be interesting to see how much he contributes in the finals.)

James still needs lots of MVP awards, finals MVPs, and championships to be the greatest player of all time, however, by leading the not-so-talented Cavaliers to the NBA Finals, he made a big step in that direction. Think about how much more talent that Russell, Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Bird, Wilt Chamberlain (the two times he won), and Oscar Roberston (the one time he won he had Jabbar) had around them than James has in Cleveland. They all had great teams and Hall of Famers around them. Jordan had Scottie Pippen for all 6 of his championships. Lebron has Larry Hughes. I think you get the point. This is like Batman without Robin, the Lone Ranger without Tonto, Hillary without Bill (or vice versa). The odds are against the Cavaliers, but with "The Chosen One" on top of his now remarkable game, they at least have a puncher's chance. Yes, the West was better than the East this year (again) and the Tim Duncan-led San Antonio Spurs deserve to be favored; however, a week ago the experts on ESPN thought Detroit would have had a 50/50 chance against the Spurs if they met in the finals. But, the last I checked, "King James" led Cleveland to 4 straight wins over Detroit, and he positioned himself for a shot at his first NBA championship and what looks like his place in NBA history as one of the two greatest players ever. James still has a long way to go, but after Lebron's performances the last week, Jordan's throne is no longer secure.

Born on January 26, 1977, Vince Carter graduated from college in North Carolina and now plays the guard position for the New Jersey Nets. One of the most exciting players in the NBA, Carter was chosen in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors. After suffering injuries, Vince Carter regained his momentum with the Nets as one of the leading players in the NBA.

Even before entering the NBA, Carter showed promise as an up-and-coming basketball star. While playing as part of the North Carolina Tar Heel team, he averaged 12.3 points per game. During his junior year, Vince Carter was named First Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference, Second Team All-America and became a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award, which is presented to the nations best player.

As he entered the NBA, Vince Carter amazed both teammates and opponents with his acrobatic moves on the court. That same year, he received the Schick Rookie of the Year recognition and became the first Toronto Raptors players to be recognized as an NBA Player of the Week. During the 1999-2000 season, Carter was named to the All-NBA Third Team and was again named the NBA Player of the Week. By 2000-2001, Vince Carter was becoming very popular with fans and was also becoming a well-known name in the NBA rankings. That season, he ranked among the NBA leaders in seven different categories.

When the 2001-2002 season rolled around, Carter was thriving. On March 22, however, he announced plans to undergo surgery on an injured left knee. This misfortune caused him to miss the final 14 games of the season. In the 2002-2003 season, Vince Carter averaged 20.6 points during his 43 games. It was this year that he missed a career-high 39 games due to several appearances on the injured list. The following season found Vince Carter receiving the most votes in the NBA All-Star balloting program for the 2004 NBA All-Star Game.

Vince Carter made his mark on the 2004-2005 NBA season, during which he averaged 24.5 points per game and ranked 1st on the team in points. In addition, he was awarded the Eastern Conference Player of the Week and Month and was voted as a starter for the 2005 NBA All-Star Game. Vince Carter has managed to find great success both on an off the court. This married father of one was named on of Sporting News 2004 Good Guys in professional sports for his activities away from the court. In July 2003, Carter unveiled a professional-sized basketball court, which was funded by his foundation, in Torontos Dixon Park. The court is valued at $130,000 and officially opened with Carter sending the first ball through the hoop. In September 2002, he donated $2.5 million for financing the construction of a new gym at his former high school in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Fans who would like to request a signed photo or simply send Vince Carter their best wishes are urged to do so in care of his NBA franchise team. 2002-03 UD Glass Premiere Issues Jersey CBP Carlos Boozer (Basketball Cards) (Piece of Authentic NBA Uniform)

There is hardly a player out there that does not like One on One basketball. I remember as a kid playing in the driveway. Here is what was going on in my mind. The clock is down to 10 seconds. Kent has the ball on the wing. He faces his man - One on One. He freezes his man with a jab step. 5..... 4..... 3......

Kent goes right past his man and straight to the hoop. 2......

Kent lays the ball in. 1......... (Buzzer sounds!)

Kent has just won the NBA Championships for the Indiana Pacers!

Ever been there?

I know that I have been in that scenario many times.

Keep reading. Below you will find some basic tips on some one on one basketball moves.

Some Basic Keys for One-on-One Moves

Definition: Jab Step - A short, quick step to one side of your opponent but towards the basket.

1. Jab and Go

Take a jab step. If the defender does not react, take the ball straight to the hoop. Drive a close to the defender as possible.

2. Rocker

Take a jab step. If the defender reacts, pull back for a jump shot.

3. Rocker and Go

Take a jab step and rock back as if you are going to take a jump shot. As the defender reacts to your attempted shot, take the ball to the hoop.

Drills

Jab Step Practice

Simply have the players work on their footwork without a defender. Practicing any footwork takes time - but essential.

Static Defense Drill

Players are in pairs - one offense and one defense. Offensive player starts in a triple threat position and executes the jab and go, the rocker and the rocker and go at 1/2 speed. As footwork develops, the offensive player will begin moving at 3/4 speed and then full speed.

Emphasize: Protect the ball. Maintain balance. A long and explosive first step.

Committed Defense Drill (Dummy Defense)

Players are in pairs - One offense and one defense. Defender hands the ball to the offense who makes a move immediately Defender reacts leaving an opening. This drill brings into live defense as soon as the offense has dribbled.

As a coach, you have the potential to significantly shape not only your players self-esteem but also how they view the world.

In many cases, the player coach relationship is stronger than almost any other adult-child relationship.

As a sports coach, you teach the only class that carries any meaning for some kids.

Coaches also have the privilege of leading one of the few activities where very often, both the adult and child are equally invested. Most kids don't care too much about what they learned in math, no matter how important the topic is to their math teacher. Sports is one of the few venues that is different; 9 times out of 10, the outcome of that game means just as much, if not more, to the player as it does to the coach.

Despite being aware of their potential impact, many coaches struggle to develop strong relationships with their players. They try to fit themselves into roles like "disciplinarian", or "buddy" , or others. Often they're only hurting the situation, if their response distracts from the Big Picture:

If you really want to make an impact in your player's lives, the best place to start is by dropping any preconceived ideas about what a "coach" is if those ideas cause you to act in a way that is not responsive to your team.

I'll try to condense that idea down to something more manageable: Here's the best I can do:

Stop following made-up rules about how a coach should act if they distract you from being a Teacher.

* Your first focus should always be on teaching basketball in a way that helps your team maximize on its potential. That is a coach's primary job.

* The positive impact that you can make as a coach comes through the game of basketball, not the other way around. If you aren't concerned with teaching the game well and only focus on being a positive role model, eventually people are going to start to question your motives.

Again, the coach's primary role is "teacher". Any other "rules" about who a "coach" is are only getting in the way influence you to act as anything other than a teacher.

What is teaching? I define it as changing behavior. If you aren't getting the changes in behavior that you should be getting from your team (in terms of basketball development or behavior), then you need to evaluate and adjust.

* How can a coach change behavior? A wise woman once told me that the coach's role in the learning/growth process can be defined in these terms: "Align" and "Confront". She was right.

* Some coaches go by a rule that sounds something like: "I need to be a 'disciplinarian.' All kids need is structure and tough love".

Well, kids do need structure, but if you're inflexible, or a poor communicator, or if you come off in a way that makes all of your players feel as though you don't care about them as people... don't expect to have a positive or lasting impact in their lives. How can you expect them to trust or respect you, if you never extend them the same?

You might feel that you have their respect because they do what ever you tell them to do. Try to consider that they might be doing whatever you say out of fear, or maybe it's just because they love basketball so much that they're willing to put up with you. It doesn't necessarily mean that they trust you, respect you.

* Other coaches go by this rule: "I need to be encouraging and give nothing but positive reinforcement. Kids just need someone to believe in them unconditionally and they will blossom". Well, it is true that kids need positive reinforcement; but they also need to be taught and to grow. And they need to respect you. For every 5 kids over the age of 10 that you can show me that needs nothing more than a 'nurturer', I'll show you 5 more who will make it their personal hobby to disrespect you if they think that you're afraid to set them straight every once in awhile. If those 10 kids are all on your team, you wont be able to get any of them to respond to you.

They resist at times because that is what kids do. They resist.

Most kids will resist at some point just to test you - to see if you're willing to confront them when necessary. If you don't confront them - you fail the test - and you fail to win their respect.

This is a difficult hole to dig yourself out of, so be aware. As a coach, you need to understand that they are going to test you, and you should be prepared to respond appropriately.

But kids do want to be taught, and to improve. They rely on their coach to be a major part of that process. How can you expect a player to grow if you aren't ever willing to confront them? You are't giving them the information they need to grow.

If your team gives a horrible effort in a game, they need a lot more than encouragement. They need to be told that they gave a horrible effort in that game, and that they should hold themselves to an expectation of always working to reach their potential.

Not only do they need to hear this, eventually your players will lose respect for you if you don't say it.

If you have done your job of teaching the game well, and if you have been flexible enough in your approach to align with them at the appropriate times, you'll usually be surprised to find that your team's most significant growth points occur when (or shortly after) you confront them.

* Other coaches strongly believe that: 'Good coaches never swear,' and that any coach who does swear will damage the player-coach relationship. One has nothing to do with the other. It's probably not a good idea to swear, but I have known coaches whose mouths would put some sailors to shame. Still, they have incredibly strong relationships with their players, and with the players' parents. That approach would probably get me fired from most schools, but somehow it works for them. Why does it work for them? Because they see the big picture, and don't let anything get in the way of them following the most important rule...

Be a teacher. Teach your players the game, and teach them your expectations for behavior.

Understand that in order to teach, you must "align" and "confront" depending on the situation: one approach without the other won't get the results you're looking for.

Do this consistently and you will develop strong, lasting relationships with your players that are built on trust and respect.
